Retired Huber superintendent takes new job

- By Bonnie Meibers Staff Writer

Susan Gunnell, the newly retired Huber Heights superintendent, will start a new role in August.

The Montgomery County Educational Service Center announced Gunnell will be director of its Regional Center.

The MCESC Regional Center houses many student services in special educa- tion, connecting families with support and services for children with disabilities.

Shannon Cox, MCESC associate superintendent, said she is excited to have someone with an extensive background in special education and experience in administration lead the Regional Center.

“This is really an important position to making sure the needs of all the region’s children are met,” Cox said.

Gunnell worked in the Huber Heights school district for 34 years, the last seven as superintendent. Gunnell will begin Aug. 1 and said she is looking forward to it.

“I have over 20 years of experience supporting educators, parents and students in providing services for students with disabilities and I look forward to continuing that mission in my new role,” Gunnell said.

Gunnell started her career in 1980 as a special education teacher, now called an intervention specialist. She was then a school psychologist for many years with Huber Heights.

“So this is like my career coming full circle,” Gunnell said. “I’m back where I began.”

Gunnell said her sister had disabilities, so her interest in special education comes from her capacities as a sibling, volunteer and educator.

“The Regional Center is really a regional resource for schools in and out of the county,” Cox said.

“They help kids with really special challenges. It is a really special place to work.”
