DAYTON Project DAWN

Families of Addicts will host a Narcan training presented by Project DAWN on Wednesday at the Life Enrichment Center, 425 N Findlay St., from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Arrive a few minutes early to choose a snack and water or coffee. Free parking on site.

Project DAWN is a community-based overdose education and naloxone distributi­on program. Project DAWN participan­ts receive training on:

■ Recognizin­g the signs and symptoms of overdose

■ Distinguis­hing between different types of overdose ■ Performing rescue breathing ■ Calling emergency medical services

■ Administer­ing intranasal Naloxone

Participan­ts will receive a Project DAWN Kit, which includes two doses of Naloxone, a medication that can reverse an overdose that is caused by an opioid drug. Participan­ts can also attend the meeting to refill used or expired kits.

Mini-triathlon

The Parks and Recreation Department is hosting its annual mini-triathlon event at Wilson Park on Aug. 3. The event is open to children ages 4 to 11 years old. Cost is $10 per child and includes a participat­ion medal if registered by Aug. 1.

Competitor­s will be divided into three age groups. The youngest group, 4-5 years old, will bike one-quarter mile, run one-quarter

mile and swim 25 meters. The 6-8-year-old group will bike onehalf mile, run one-half mile and swim 50 meters. The 9-11-year old group will bike three-quarters of a mile, run three-quarters of a mile and swim 100 meters.

Participan­ts must bring bikes, helmets, tennis shoes and proper swim attire. Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. with the first heat starting shortly thereafter.

Benefit concert

The nationally recognized Giving Strings Orchestra will perform its 20th annual benefit concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 10, on the 200 block of Ridgewood Avenue.

Dr. Patrick Reynolds, assistant conductor of the Dayton Philharmon­ic, will conduct the all volunteer orchestra. The concert, in a program of classics to pops, will feature Maya Vansuch Wurth, a singer in residence with Dayton Opera and the featured soloist.

This annual concert raises funds and awareness for charitable organizati­ons that affect the lives of children. All proceeds from this

year’s concert will benefit NAMI, Montgomery County, a local grassroots organizati­on that provides education and support for families impacted by mental illnesses.

All are invited to attend the free concert. Funds will be raised by free will donations and the sale of items in a silent auction. Audience members should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.

The Dream Bigg Foundation will hold its eighth Annual “Do It Bigg Back to School” event from 12 to 7 p.m. Aug. 12, at Broadway Park in Trotwood.

Antwon Cunningham formed The Dream Bigg Foundation in 2010 and hosted is first annual “Do it Bigg Back-to-School” event at McIntosh Park (Riverview Park) located in Dayton View. The event included a concert, food, games, dance contests with monetary awards and two bikes; in addition to school supplies and book bags. The goal is to make the 2019 backto-school event larger than ever to include school supplies, clothes, tablets/laptops and prizes. The event is free to the public with a goal of giving supplies to over 300 people.
