GREENE FAIR AN OLD OHIO TRADITION
Portion of proceeds to support those affected by storms.
The Greene County Fair, the oldest fair west of the Alleghenies, opens Sunday.
This year, the fair features country singers Jimmie Allen and Riley Green, a food pantry and a special event to support tornado victims.
The fair is open from Sunday through Saturday at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia. The gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Daily admission is $6 and the fair is free for children under 9 with a paying adult.
Ride wristbands are $18. Those wristbands are discounted to $13 on Wednesday, July 31, for family night from 4 to 10 p.m. Individual tickets cost $1.50, and each ride takes an average of two to three tickets.
This year, the fair is holding a special #GreeneStrong event to support Greene County residents impacted by the Memorial Day tornadoes.
“On Saturday, we discounted our admissions down to $4 instead of $6 and are donating a dollar to support the people of Greene County,” said Dan Bullen, fair board president. “The ride company is also taking one dollar for every ride band they sell and donating it.”
All contributions will go to the Greene County Community Foundation.
Other special events include truck and tractor pulls, ATV races and the High Flying Pages, a trapeze act. This year’s fair will also offer a pond where people can fish.
Officials are hoping for a larger turnout after poor weather for three days hurt the fair last year.
“Last year we had about 55,000 people,” Bullen said. “We can do better but it all depends on the weather. It all depends on what Mother Nature throws at us.”
