Dayton strength coach leaves for job with Lakers

- By David Jablonski Staff Writer

Ed Streit, the DAYTON — strength and conditioning coach for the Dayton Flyers men’s basketball team, announced Tuesday he is leaving the program after one season.

On Twitter, Streit wrote he has accepted a position as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Los Angeles Lakers. It will be his second NBA job. Streit worked as a strength and conditioning associate coach with the Chicago Bulls for three years.

“The game of basketball has taken me to some incredible places,” Streit wrote on Twitter, “and has allowed me to make some incredible friendships. Dayton has truly been one of the best stops along the way. The past year has been an amazing experience, and I am very grateful for it.”

Assuming Dayton hires a new strength coach before the 2019-20 season, it will be the third strength coach in as many years. Streit replaced Casey Cathrall, who left for a position at the University of Miami after one season with the Flyers. The previous strength coach, Patrick O’Neal, was with the program for two seasons.

Alumni update: Former Dayton forward Josh Cunningham received an invitation to the NBA G League Player Invitational on Monday. He was one of 50 players invited.

The event takes place Friday in Chicago, Cunningham’s hometown. According to the G League, “This event will challenge NBA G League hopefuls, vying to receive a contract for the NBA G League Draft in October, to showcase their skills via full-court games for NBA G League player personnel, executives, coaches and industry scouts.”

Another former Flyer, Kendall Pollard, participated in the G League tryout two years ago when it was also in Chicago. He ended up playing for the Salt Lake City Stars in the G League that season.

Recruit ranking: Lukas Frazier, who committed to UD in June, moved from No. 7 to No. 2 on a Prep Hoops Ohio list of the top Ohio prospects in the 2020 class. Contact this reporter at 937244-7400 or email David. Jablonski@coxinc.com.
