VICTIMS REMEMBERED AS COMMUNITY UNITES
Services will be today for six of the nine victims.
Six of the nine victims killed in the Oregon District shooting a week ago will be laid to rest in separate services today, as members of the community find ways to come together and support those affected.
Services are scheduled today for Monica Brickhouse, Nicholas Cumer, Derrick Fudge, Saeed Saleh, Logan Turner and Beatrice Nicole Warren-Curtis. Monday services are set for Thomas McNichols and Lois Oglesby.
Funeral plans were not made public for Megan Betts, the sister of the shooter, nor for the shooter himself, Connor Betts.
Meanwhile, donations are pouring in for victims. The Connor Group donated $100,000 in an effort to raise $250,000 through the Oregon District Victims Relief Fund. The Dayton Daily News is partnering with the Dayton Foundation to raise money for the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy Fund, to which Molina Healthcare donated $75,000 to on Friday.
Public events scheduled for this weekend include Oregon District Hugs & Healing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. The walk through the Oregon District is designed to bring people together to support local businesses and each other.
Dayton police say there will be an increased security presence in the Oregon District this weekend to put people at ease.
“It’s an incredibly safe environment,” Dayton police major Wendy Stiver said. “This was a highly unusual event, as you all know, and it’s no way indicative of the type of crime we see downtown on a regular basis.”
