DAILY BRIDGE CLUB:

A club player showed me today’s deal.

“I was North,” he said. “When my partner bid 1NT, I passed. I thought he might have only 16 points.”

East won the first club with the king and returned a club. Dummy led a heart: deuce, jack, queen. Declarer won the next club and led a low diamond. East let dummy’s queen win, but South then led the jack, winning, and a heart to his 10. He won three diamonds, two hearts, two spades and two clubs. Nicely played.

“Should I have raised to 2NT?” North asked. “Maybe partner’s hand was too strong to overcall 1NT.”

I like solid 1NT overcalls to reduce the risk of a heavy penalty if my partner 30 31 33 34 35 36 37 38 42 43 Ship that survived the Clashing Rocks AOL rival Game involved in several Costner films Bad impression Like four midyear months Snapper rival Access charge Figaro’s hometown Capture Man, for one has nothing. I might have raised to 2NT as North: It pays to bid boldly in such a situation because the play will be easier when East is known to have the missing high cards.

Another factor is partner’s skill as declarer. If you know he will play the socks off the cards, be aggressive.

DAILY QUESTION: You hold: ♠ QJ92 ♥ K92 ◆ K 64 ♣ K J 3. Your partner opens one diamond, you bid one spade and he raises to two spades. What do you say?

ANSWER: This hand has 13 points opposite partner’s opening bid, hence most players would commit to game. Still, the hand has no aces and a bunch of losers. Bid 3NT to give partner a Like some volcanoes and military personnel 46 Hockey gear 47 Go along with 50 Bolt with great speed
