Dementia training
An estimated 5 million Americans are living with some form of dementia. Otterbein SeniorLife, located at 580 N. State Route 741, has partnered with Second Wind Dreams to take a bold step in enriching the lives of older adults with dementia, by introducing a program to its partners (employees) that trains them to have a better understanding of what life with dementia is like. The Second Wind Dreams program builds sensitivity and awareness in individuals caring for those living with dementia. Otterbein partners in all departments will experience this training and Otterbein hopes in the future to offer the training to family members.
The Virtual Dementia Tour is a scientifically proven method of building a greater understanding of dementia through the use of patented sensory tools and instruction. The VDT was created by P.K. Beville, PhD, an award-winning geriatric psychologist, dementia expert and founder of Second Wind Dreams, Inc. Proceeds from the sale of Virtual Dementia Tour support the work of Second Wind Dreams, an international, nonprofit organization recognized as the first in the nation committed to changing the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams for elders and offering of innovative educational opportunities to caregivers, families, and communities. Otterbein Social Worker Terri Wolgemot-Couch says, “The sensitivity that stems from this experience helps our partners incorporate an awareness into their daily service that sets us apart from other senior living communities. It is another way we strengthen our mission by enhancing the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons.”
