‘Zoned in’ Wayne tops 23-team field at Baker Bash
For much of the high school boys bowling season Beavercreek, Centerville and Fairmont have stood atop the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s American Division.
With both Beavercreek and Fairmont at the highly competitive Baker Bash tournament on Monday, Wayne coach Mike White entered cautiously optimistic.
“Just to do their best,” White said of the team’s goal. “I knew they’d do pretty decent, but this is a battle-tested tournament so we didn’t know how far they would go or how they would hold up.”
As it turned out, it was what the Warriors held up that impressed White. Wayne bested the 23-team boys field to win the Baker Bash championship at Beaver-Vu Lanes. The Warriors won with a lineup of one senior, one junior, one sophomore and two freshmen.
“I didn’t think we’d make it (to the finals) because our
Baker game hasn’t been on point,” White said. “Their Bakers were good (Monday). They were solid. They were zoned in and it was outstanding watching them bowl . ... We had some freshmen who held up pretty strong so I’m proud of them.”
The annual tournament hosts some of the top teams from the Southwest District, including league leaders Beavercreek (Greater Western
Ohio Conference), Carroll (Greater Catholic League Co-Ed), Sidney (Miami Valley League), Tippecanoe (MVL), Monroe (Southwestern Buckeye League) and Cincinnati Elder (GCL South). Mix in teams like Butler, Middletown and Versailles and the Baker Bash is a tough victory to earn.
Wayne’s five-man roster featured senior Theon Hill, junior Charlie Kunkel, sophomore Matt Green and freshmen Evan Dahinghaus and Jason Green.
“Theon for the last four years has been one of our spark plugs,” White said. “He’s the humor guy who takes a lot of pressure off of the guys. That’s a great thing Theon can give us, especially with the young guys.”
Wayne finished first in the 12-game qualifying round that trimmed the field of 23 down to 12 teams. Wayne’s total of 2,518 topped runner-up Reynoldsburg’s 2,448. The Warriors finished seventh after the three-game quarterfinal session, just making the eight-team cut. From there the Warriors finished first in the semifinals and championship round, winning the title with 481.
Tippecanoe finished second (424), Fairfield third (362) and Sidney fourth (310).
■ Beavercreek senior
Michael Donahue leads the GWOC with his 227.6 average. He rolled a season-high 568 with games of 300 and 268 at Eastern Lanes on Jan. 14. Xenia’s Zane Eneix and Coldwater’s Keaton Bruns have also bowled 300 games this season.
■ Sidney senior Jaxson Rickey and Tippecanoe senior James Ridgeway continue to battle for the MVL lead. Rickey leads the league with a 220.7 average and Ridgeway is at 217.7.
■ Carroll continues to lead the GCL Co-Ed Division at 8-0 and is paced by senior Jackson Mitchell’s 207.9 average. He trails Chaminade Julienne sophomore Tian Turner’s 210.5 for the league lead.
■ The Southwest District tournament draw will be held Feb. 2. The Division II boys sectional tournament will be hosted by Poelking Marian Lanes on Feb. 13. The D-I sectional tournament follows on Feb. 19 at Poelking South.
