Tips for making every dollar count when planning a wedding

- John North

February is National Wedding Month. Whether your wedding is coming up or you recently got engaged, you may be looking for professionals to hire for the big day. When it comes to hiring your wedding planner and other vendors for your wedding, it’s important to do business with someone you trust. There is no need to add unnecessary stress to the occasion.

On average, people spend around $26,000 on their weddings. It’s important to make every dollar count - that includes your planner and vendors.

Better Business Bureau offers these tips for hiring wedding professionals:

■ Set a budget and stick to it. Consider having your wedding off season, winter ceremonies tend to be cheaper.

■ Research businesses before hiring them. Before you fall in love with a vendor, check its availability for your wedding date. Read reviews. Ask family and friends for recommendations. Also, ask each vendor for references and call them.

■ Check how long businesses have been operating and how many people are still using the services. You want to avoid paying a business that might close before it can provide products or services.

■ Ask about awards received and memberships in professional organizations.

■ Make sure personalities mesh. You have to be comfortable sharing your vision with them.

■ Ask what services your wedding planner will provide. Some will just help you plan the wedding. Others will help you with the planning of other events, such as the engagement party, bridal showers and your rehearsal dinner.

■ Keep in mind, many vendors (planners, florists, decorators, etc.) have portfolios. Look at their portfolios and make sure the quality meets your expectations and style.

■ Do not rush to make a decision. Take your time and make sure you find the best people for your wedding.

■ Pay as little as possible upfront and pay with a credit card. If you pay by credit card you have protection in the event of a problem that is not available with other forms of payment.

■ Get everything in writing. Make sure it includes the dates, times, services and prices you agreed on. Read the contract carefully before signing. Keep your receipts and documentation

■ Prepare for your first meeting with the business. Bring pictures and examples of what you want and be sure to ask questions.

■ Confirm vendors and services at least two weeks prior to the event to prevent surprises.

■ Consider getting wedding insurance to cover unexpected emergencies or cancellations.
