Who do they think ‘they’ are anyway?

I’ve been thinking about “they” and “them” a lot lately.

What about you? Certainly, you’ve heard of them. Everyone has.

They are the people who should “do something” about it, but don’t.

They are not pulling their weight. They are not listening. They just don’t get it.

Do you even know what they look like?

Are their faces round or square, in color or black and white?

Do they have human features like you and me?

Why do the theys and the thems do it so wrong?

Why are the theys and the thems out to get us?

Why can’t the theys and the thems get their you-know-what together? How dare they?

You know how they are.

You know what they are up to.

Where do they get off ? They have the power. They make the rules. They hold us down. Can you call them by their first names? Can you pick them out of a lineup?

Why are we giving them, whoever they are, all the responsibility?

They don’t walk our dogs, feed our kids or give our neighbors sugar in a pinch.

Yet we call on them to “do something.” To “fix it.”

They never get it just right, but we just keep on blaming them.

How strange is that?

How dare we?

You know how we are. You know what we are up to.

Where do we get off ? We have the power. We make the rules We hold us down. Why won’t we “do something.”

As it turns out, they and them look a lot like you and me.
