Things to do while social distancing at home:
The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery will release a daily DIY Science Activity with easy to get materials, step by step instructions, and a basic science explanation for families to download available on its website www. boonshoftmuseum.org. Here are some highlights of our online content:
Provide a fun, and educational opportunity for children while they are out of school, with materials that are inexpensive and easy to acquire, many already at home.
Allow the community (and beyond) an inside glimpse of parts of the museum not always seen. This may include behind the scenes areas of our collections department, unique items and stories about them, or interactions of our Discovery Zoo residents with our Live Animals team. There may also be an overview of popular or new exhibits, like Ancient Egypt that just opened at the end of January. Suggestions on ways to spend time outside with nature activities suitable for backyard adventures, or presentations by our Astronomy team to increase appreciation of the night sky and items in our solar system and beyond.
Offer“Ask an Expert” opportunities to allow people to send in questions about a science theme each week. Topics may include anthropology, astronomy, paleontology, or physics - just to name a few!
Gov. Mike DeWine has activated the Ohio National Guard to help with food distribution in the state, includ- ing in Montgomery, Butler and Clark counties.
About 300 members have been activated.
They will assist the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and the Ohio Association of Foodbanks with transporting, packag- ing and distributing food.
Members from the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Columbus will help with food distribution in Montgomery, Clark, Butler, Allen, Cuyahoga, Franklin, Hamilton, Hocking, Lorain, Lucas, Mahoning and Summit counties.
“Our state is tackling the public health issue caused by the outbreak of COVID19. We have a responsibility to respond when our governor and fellow Ohioans need our assistance,” said Maj. Gen. John C. Harris Jr., Ohio adjutant general. “We have a long history of supporting the state and nation during times of emergency. Our Guard members are coming from counties across the state to serve their own communities, ensuring their neighbors continue to receive food and pantry items.”
Members of the Ohio Military Reserve, which is part of the state’s defense force, will be placed on active duty to coordinate with the Ohio Association of Foodbanks at foodbank locations.
“We welcome these National Guard members as part of our foodbank family and thank them for their dedication and diligence in the weeks ahead,” said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director for the Ohio Asso- ciation of Foodbanks.
