Readers react to virus tactics on Facebook
Our Facebook pages have seen plenty of reader reaction to the measures being taken across the state to combat the coronavirus outbreak. Here’s a sampling. Readers react to concerns that local restaurants and bars may not survive ordered closure:
Paul Race: If you can buy gift certificates to local restaurants, that would be a good way to boost their income stream during the crisis.
Janet Hammond: I would hesitate to buy a gift card as the restaurant may never reopen.
Paul Race: Janet Hammond, true, that’s a risk, but we’ve been stuck with gift cards from restaurants that closed in a normal economy and survived. I’m not talking about huge chains, either, just the mom-and-pop restaurants we frequent, which there are few of.
Troy Miller: Carryout/ delivery is not sustainable for some of these businesses and in many cases doesn’t cover their operating costs. I definitely think we are going to lose some of our favorites if the mandated closures go on for much longer.
Linda Burton Roberts: Please continue ordering carry out from restaurants you normally frequent. They will be so appreciative of your support. We ordered from Texas Roadhouse and had a fantastic meal!
Christine Marie: Everybody spent their money on toilet paper or food — why bother?
Susan Mears: Negativity is not what we need right now.
Justin Ray: It’s not just restaurants. (Other business people) need food too.
Readers react to Sinclair Community College and other schools canceling commencement ceremonies:
Lynnette Neff: It’s beyond heartbreaking to have them cancel commencement. My daughter worked very hard to get her degree. Now she will only get an envelope in the mail. They could have postponed it until the fall, and waited to see how things go. Instead, they’ve let down the graduates, their families, and their friends. They’ve robbed these graduates of the recognition for their accomplishments that they rightfully deserve. This shows that Sinclair is not the community it claims to be!
Scott Truesdale: I can tell you that Sinclair takes great pride in their graduation ceremony. So, for them to cancel it shows how much they value the well-being of their students and staff.
Michele Boatman-Johnson: Clark State canceled theirs yesterday as well. And I am heartbroken, as I am to graduate this year.
Laura Shutts: I can understand if they had postponed it but the fact that they fully canceled it pisses me off. I worked way too hard just to get a packet in the mail.
Kimberly Hawley: Too soon.
Jeffrey Hale: I would be pissed off. I know I am pissed my daughter won’t get to go to her high school graduation after working so hard to get there. Hope the rat in Columbus is happy.
Jody Kochersperger:
Jeffrey Hale, he is doing what’s best for our community.
Claudia Matherly Stolz: I have great respect for Gov. DeWine and Dr. Amy Acton. They have not pushed the panic botton, they give the rationale for how we can stay below the curve. They speak calmly, answer questions. They show the nation leadership. Give them a break! Proud to be an Ohioan, and guess what? I am not a Republican, but I voted for DeWine for Attorney General and for Governor, and I will again. I view him as different than most politicians. He listens and acts.
Jody Kochersperger: Claudia Matherly Stolz, I agree 100%. I watch him every day and he is doing a great job.
