CBC in need of donors

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley gave blood March 18 at the Dayton Community Blood Center to help avert a blood shortage on top of the COVID-19 crisis and encouraged others to be “Donor Strong.”

“Look, this is something you can do to make a difference and help your community,” said Whaley.

Blood drive cancellati­ons have risen to 55, with a projection now of 2,400 lost units. CBC is taking emergency measures to avert a regional blood shortage as the community acts to halt the spread of the coronaviru­s COVID-19. CBC is urging eligible members of the community to donate blood and asking blood drive sponsors to keep the blood drives they have scheduled. ■ After Wednesday, March 18 collection­s CBC’s hospital inventory is holding at a 7-day supply with 7 to 14-days available across blood types. Lows: Type O-positive 7-days, AB-positive 6 days.

■ The Dayton CBC Donor Center totaled 158 donors with 138 red cell units and 13 platelet and plasma. Whole blood donors totaled 360 at all locations.

■ The Donor Strong Blood Drive continues next week. Everyone who registers to donate through Sunday, March 22 at the CBC Donor Center, 349 South Main St., will receive a free Kings Island ticket or free Cinemark movie ticket, plus the current donor gift of “Spring into Giving” socks. The Donor Strong Blood Drive will continue through the week of Monday, March 23 the Dayton CBC Donor Center with a free Kroger $10 gift card or a free Kings Island ticket for everyone who registers to donate.

Beginning Sunday, March 22, the Dayton CBC Donor Center will be open on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Do not be afraid to donate!

■ The blood supply is safe, and it is safe to donate.

■ Donors must be in good health. People with any cough or cold symptoms should not come to a blood drive. Take your temperatur­e before coming to a blood drive.

■ There are no reported cases of coronaviru­s transmissi­on through blood transfusio­n.

■ CBC is increasing hygienic and sanitary procedures.

■ Blood drives are not mass gatherings. They are controlled events with infection safeguards to protect donors, staff, and blood products.

Blood donation requiremen­ts: Donors are required to provide a photo ID that includes their full name. Past CBC donors are also asked to bring their CBC donor ID card. Donors must be at least 17 years of age (16-years-old with parental consent: form available at www.givingbloo­d.org or at CBC branch & blood drive locations), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds (you may have to weigh more, depending on your height), and be in good physical health. The Food and Drug Administra­tion (FDA) changes blood donor eligibilit­y guidelines periodical­ly.
