What is HEAP?
The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program that provides assistance to eligible Ohioans with their home energy bills. This onetime benefit is applied directly to the customer’s utility bill or bulk fuel bill.
Who is eligible for HEAP?
Ohioans with a household income at or below 175% of the federal poverty guidelines are eligible for the program.
Utility help during the coronavirus crisis:
1) The Ohio Department of Health says that the state has received an extension of the Winter Crisis Program through May 1, and for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) through June 1.
2) Vectren has temporarily suspended natural gas and electric service disconnections for nonpayment.
3) As of March 14, DP&L suspended disconnection for nonpayment until further notice or a minimum of 30 days for residential and business customers.
Here’s what you’ll need to apply for the Energy Assistance Programs:
■ Proof of income for each household member. Income includes: Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), Social Security, Pension, Alimony, Wages, Self-employment, Unemployment, etc.
■ Copies of your most recent utility bills
■ A list of all household members, including Social Security numbers and birth dates
■ Proof of U.S. citizenship/legal residency for all household members. Documents that are accepted to prove U.S. citizenship/legal residency include: a Social Security Card, birth certificate, U.S. Passport, naturalization paper/certification of citizenship, permanent VISA, or INS ID Card.
You will need a scanned copy or photo of your proof of income, recent utility bills, and proof of citizenship to upload to the application.
