Wittenberg University will offer residence hall students the option to request a single room for the price of a double room for the 202021 academic year, according to the school’s website.

“The health and safety of our students has been at the center of every decision we have made as an institution in response to the pandemic,” said Casey Gill, vice president for student development and dean of students. “We believe that in offering this opportunity and moving toward a lower density residential model, we can reassure our students and their families that the well-being of their students is foremost in our minds.”

The option is available due to the ongoing concerns of the coronavirus and the challenge it presents in terms of living in shared spaces, the website said.

“For new students who deposit to Wittenberg by June 1 and complete the housing survey by June 7, residence hall placement announcements will be sent on Monday, June 15,” the website said. “All residence hall rates will be flattened to the standard double rate for that hall for the 2020-2021 academic year.”

For example a traditional double will cost $2,765 per semester or $5,530 per year. This compares to the previous cost of a traditional single of $3,300 per semester or $6,600 per year. New Hall and other housing rates vary.

Instructions on how to complete an updated housing survey for incoming students are now available through the admission student portal.

The new residence hall option follows an earlier announcement from President Michael Frandsen regarding the university’s intentions for the fall semester — in hopes that students will return in the fall.

“Wittenberg University has been and always will be a residential educational experience that fulfills its mission and purpose when our community is living and learning on campus,” Frandsen said last week. “With this as a core component of our foundation, we intend to do everything we can to move forward with resuming in-person classes this fall.”
