Parking dispute leads to shooting, police chase

A shooting in Dayton — that injured a man and led to a police chase where speeds reached 120 miles per hour — started after a parking dispute at a West Riverview Drive apartment, according to court records.

Ferdinand Maurice McElroy, 54, of Dayton, was charged with six counts of felonious assault, one count of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and one count of failure to comply with the order of a police officer in Dayton Municipal Court.

On May 29, McElroy confronted a group of men about where their truck was parked, read a court affidavit.

The men reportedly told McElroy they’d move the truck when they were done unloading their remodeling equipment.

McElroy pulled out a handgun and shot one of the men in the stomach and then fired two more rounds at the rest of the group, according to court documents.

Two of the men then agreed to move the truck. As they left the apartment to move the truck, one reportedly pulled out a phone to call for help.

”Upon seeing this, McElroy pointed his gun at [the man] and took his cell phone,” the affidavit read.

McElroy then drove away in his car.

An officer in the area saw the car fleeing the apartment and tried to stop McElroy.

McElroy fled, leading police on a chase for “several minutes” and reaching speeds of 120 mph, according to court records.

”It only stopped when McElroy ran out of gas,” the affidavit read. “McElroy was taken into custody without incident.”
