Blood drive on Friday

One year ago the shock and grief of the Oregon District mass shooting turned into resolve and compassion as hundreds in the Dayton area honored the victims by donating blood.

Community Blood Center is calling on donors to again support the blood supply with the “Donor Strong Blood Drive” Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Dayton CBC Donation Center, 349 S. Main St.

Everyone who registers to donate will receive a “Donor Strong” long-sleeve t-shirt or tumbler in addition to the “Time to Save a Life” t-shirt and the new “Blood Donor” face mask. Donors must make an appointment at www.DonorTime.com or call 937-461-3220.

In the week following the Aug. 4, 2019 Oregon District shooting more than 1,700 people registered to donate whole blood, platelets and plasma at the Dayton CBC and CBC mobile blood drives, including 171 first-time donors.

The anniversary of the shooting comes during a time of great need caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. CBC has struggled to maintain the blood supply due to business blood drive cancellations and limitations on community blood drives, combined with high summer usage at area hospitals.

CBC is also asking more COVID19 survivors to consider donating their antibody-rich plasma for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. The CBC COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma (CCP) program is now accepting donors who have tested positive by blood test for COVID-19 antibodies.
