Wright State’s league cancels sports for fall
Horizon still to decide whether shifting to spring will be possible.
The Horizon League, home to Wright State, on Thursday canceled competition for the fall sports season because of the coronavirus pandemic. The league previously had postponed the start of fall sports until Oct. 1.
The decision affects sports that compete for championships in the fall — men’s and women’s cross-country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball — and others that compete in the fall and spring — men’s and women’s golf, softball and men’s and women’s tennis,
“We are disheartened for our student-athletes who will not get the opportunity to compete this fall,” Wright State athletics said in a release. “Their hard work leading up to this point, in the face of challenging circumstances for everyone, has been inspiring.
“We support the Horizon League’s decision to delay the fall sports season, as Wright State Athletics remains committed to the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans as our top priority.
“We are fortunate to have outstanding coaches and support staff who remain committed to working with our student-athletes, and are confident that we will be prepared to get back to competition when the athletic landscape has improved.”
A decision on whether fall sports can shift to the spring will be made later. Guided by NCAA regulations and state and institutional guidelines, individual schools will make their own decisions on sports training, practice and recruiting.
