Newcomers arrive just in time for Reds’ worst loss of season
Bradley, Goodwin play for 15-21 Reds in 16-2 throttling by Cardinals.
ArchieBradley andBrianGoodwin may not have arrived in time tohelp theCincinnatiReds, whose postseason chances look dim after the most lopsided loss of the season.
Hours after Bradley and Goodwin, who were acquired just before the trade deadline Monday, were offifficially added to the roster, the Reds lost 16-2 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. The defeat dropped the Reds 3½ games behind second- place St. Louis in the National League Central Division with 24 games to play.
The Reds (15-21) fell a seasonsix games over .500 for the second time this season with 24 games to play. Bradley took over on themoundwith the Reds down 9-0 in the third, and Goodwin replaced Nick Castellanos in right fifield in the top of the sixth with the Reds trailing 11-0.
“It’s not the way you draw it up for two of your newplayers,” Reds manager David Bell said. “Hopefully, thatwillneverhappen again. Obviously, Archie’s going to be pitching in difffffffffffferent situations than that. It was an opportunity to get he and Brian Goodwin acclimated. They’re going to be big parts of our team.”
Bradley allowed two hits and struck out two in 1⅔ scoreless innings. This was the fifirst time he pitched before the eighth inning this season. In 10 appearances with the Arizona Diamondbacks, he entered the game three times in the eighth and seven times in the ninth.
“They traded formeto pitch in games,” Bradley said, “and that’s what I’m here to do. I know the people in Arizona will back this up. I don’t care if I pitch the ninth inning or the second inning. I want to pitch in games that matter. I want to pitch in games to help our team win. That’s what I’m here to do.”
