General Dave Yost and his office have been appointed as special prosecutors in the investigation into the death of Andre Hill at the hands of a Columbus police officer.
Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’ Brien, whose term ends on Jan. 3, filed a motion in Franklin County Common Pleas Court tomake the move official. The appointment will allow for consistency as incoming prosecutor Gary Tyack takes office in early January.
Yost’s office also oversees the Bureauof Criminal Investigation, which is investigating Hill’s death.
Hill, 47, was shot and killed by Columbus police officer Adam Coy around 1:50 a.m. Tuesday outside a garage on the 1000 block of O berlin Drive on the city’s Northwest Side.
Coy and another officer, who has not yet been identified, were responding to a non-emergency call about a car that had been parked in the street and running for a period of time. When the officers arrived, Hillwalked toward them with a cellphone in his left hand and his right hand not visible.
About 10seconds after first encountering Hill, Coy fired his service firearmmultiple times, striking Hill. No first aid was rendered by Coy or any other responding officer for at least six minutes, according toCoy’sbody camera footage.
Coy did not have the body camera on at the time of the shooting but turned it on nine secondslater. Thecamerahas a 60-second “look-back” feature that captures video, but no audio. The shooting was captured through the lookback feature.
Yost’s office will handle any potential criminal investigation into Coy or other officers, including presentation of the case to a grand jurywhen the investigation is completed.
