- JohnNorth Better Business Bureau

Shoveling your driveway can be a hassle. You may be considering hiring someone to clear the snow off your driveway. While many of us are equipped for the season with snow shovels and snowblowers, many are not or may simply be looking for a break this year. Hiring someone may be a great way to ease the burden of getting rid of difficult snow. This is especially helpful for those who are elderly, injured, have a busy schedule or simply do not want the hassle of shoveling all season.

Better Business Bureau offers these tips for hiring a snow removal contractor:

■ Start early. It’s never too soon to start shopping for a snow removal contractor.

■ Ask friends and family for recommendations.

■ Get references and call them to ask about their experience.

■ Get three estimates that include materials and service costs. Prices in the industry vary so make sure you look at all of your options.

■ Don’t hire any business that gives you an estimate without looking at your actual property. A good snow removal service will evaluate your property and check out obstacles before giving a final estimate.

■ Know whether or not the company you’re choosing uses subcontractors. If so, ask for their references too.

■ Ask if the contractor removes snow and treats ice.

■ Ask about the response time. How soon after the snow falls will they be there to do the job?

■ Inquire as to whether or not the company offers year round services. For example, they may be able to provide you with landscaping in the summer.

■ Ask about any and all costs up front so you avoid surprise charges in the future.

■ Ensure the company has insurance. If the company is not fully ensured, you may be liable for any damage or injuries on your property.

■ Make sure the materials used are safe for your family. For instance, is the ice melt product safe for any pets you may have going outside.

■ Ask how the company wants to receive your payment. Will you pay each time your driveway is plowed? Or, will the cost be split into two or three payments at the beginning, middle and end of the season? Don’t pay everything upfront.

■ Get a written agreement with the company you choose to hire that includes the price, time you should expect your driveway to be cleaned by, how much snow has to fall for services to be provided, if there are any extra charges on particularly snowy days, the cancellation policy, etc.

■ Pay by credit card to provide protection if you need to dispute the charge.
