Sources: Urban Meyer considering coaching Jaguars
Urban Meyer COLUMBUS— is considering becoming an NFL head coach, multiple sources have told The Blade.
The former Ohio State head coach has had exploratory discussions with intermediaries about the Jacksonville
Jaguars job.
Jaguars coach Doug Marrone is 23-41 in parts of five seasons, going 10-6 in 2017 and holding a double-digit fourth-quarter lead against New England in the AFC championship game before TomBrady and the Patriots rallied. Jacksonville is 12-34 the past three seasons.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that “at least two NFL teams” have reached out to Meyer to gauge his interest.
According to sources, Meyer, 56, is seriously considering Jacksonville. It would put him back in Florida, where he coached the Gators and lived for seven years, and he could draft ClemsonquarterbackTrevor Lawrence. The Jaguars (1-14) are locked in for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft after losing on Sunday. The NewYork Jets (2-13) and Jaguars can still tie for the NFL’s worst record, but Jacksonville holds the tiebreaker for the No. 1 pick.
The Jaguars are currently without a general manager.
Meyer is acutely aware of the importance a difference-making quarterback makes in the NFL. It was perhaps the one impediment to Nick Saban’s potential success with the Miami Dolphins. Drew Brees, coming off a torn labrum, was offered a contract by the Dolphins but failed his physical. Miami insteadsignedDaunte Culpepper andwent 7-9 and 6-10 in Saban’s two seasons.
Meyer currentlyworks as an assistant athletic director at Ohio State and as an acclaimed analyst for Fox Sports’ BigNoonKickoff pregame show.
