Corner Cupboard thrift shop could use donated items
In recent months I’ve been getting a lot of questions from readers who want to know where they can donate their items to a good cause.
It’s no surprise; many of us have been spending our time cleaning out closets and basements.
One of the options is Corner Cupboard Charities. The nonprofit benefits many worthwhile organizations in the Miami Valley and raises funds by operating a thrift shop in
East Dayton.
The group was founded by a group of Catholic women who wanted to send money to Glenmary Sisters serving in Appalachia.
‘We no longer have a religious affiliation, but still have the same mission, to serve the public with goods and clothes and donate proceeds to needy worthy causes,” explains board vice president Beth Cloyd. At age 10, Cloyd began helping her mother at the organization’s thrift shop. She says many of the volunteers are second- and third-generation families.
Through the years, Corner Cupboard has donated more than $3 million to organizations ranging from Building Bridges and St. Vincent De Paul to Catholic Social Services and Shoes for the Shoeless.
With an all-volunteer staff, it is run “by the community for the community.”
The Corner Cupboard Thrift and Consignment Shop is filled with
items including gentlyused clothing, accessories, household goods and more.
Here’s a partial list of what they need:
■ Shoes
■ Boots
■ Pots, pans
■ Kitchenware
■ Jewelry
■ Antiques and collectibles
■ Wood furniture
■ Flat screen TVs
■ Better quality carpets ■ Tools, electric and hand
■ Clothing for men and women
Due to the pandemic, hours at the thrift shop — 504 Xenia Ave. — have been adjusted. They are currently 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. There is pickup by appointment, please call (937) 252-5491 to arrange.
If you’d like to shop at the store, keep in mind that masks are required and temperatures will be taken at the door.
“Many of our volunteers have opted not to join us at this time, so we are in need of help as well as your discarded treasures,’ says Cloyd.
