Haskins signs with Steelers

-

Former Washington PITTSBURGH — quarterback Dwayne Haskins signed a futures deal with the Steelers following a visit on Thursday, the team announced.

Haskins, the No. 15 overall pick out of Ohio State in the 2019 draft, was released by Washington last month before the season ended. In two seasons with Washington, Haskins was 3-10 as a starter and finished last season with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. Haskins recently signed with agents Cedric Saunders and Brian Levy after some off-field issues in Washington contributed to his release by head coach Ron Rivera.

“I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways,” Rivera said in a statement when he released Haskins.

Haskins was stripped of his captaincy and fined for a COVID-19 violation last month after a video surfaced of a maskless Haskins at his girlfriend’s birthday party that included strippers.

The Steelers have two other quarterbacks under contract for next season: starter Ben Roethlisberger and backup Mason Rudolph. Josh Dobbs, who served as the third-string quarterback last season, is an unrestricted free agent.

After being released by Washington, Haskins went unclaimed through waivers and is now a free agent and eligible to sign with any team.

Also on Thursday, ESPN reported former Bengals head coach Hue Jackson interviewed with Tomlin for the vacant offensive coordinator position. Quarterbacks coach Matt Canada remains a candidate to fill that position.

Sources: Eagles plan to hire Colts’ Sirianni

The Philadelphia Eagles are nearing a deal to hire Nick Sirianni to be their head coach, according to two people familiar with the decision.

Sirianni was the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts the past three seasons. He worked under coach Frank Reich, who was offensive coordinator in Philadelphia when the Eagles won the Super Bowl three years ago.

Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t officially announced the hiring.

One person familiar with the coaching search told the AP in a text message: “Guy is a stud!”

The 39-year-old Sirianni previously served as an assistant coach with the Chiefs and Chargers.

The Eagles fired Doug Pederson following a 4-11-1 season, less than three years after he led the team to the franchise’s only Super Bowl title.

Former Packers GM Thompson dies at 68

Ted Thompson, whose 13-year run as Green Bay Packers general manager included their 2010 Super Bowl championship season, has died. He was 68.

The Packers announced Thursday that Thompson died the previous night at his home in Atlanta, Texas. A Packers official said the team was contacted by a direct family member.

Thompson was Packers general manager from 200517 and drafted many notable players on the current roster, including two-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He acquired 49 of the 53 players on the Packers’ 2010 championship team.

Thompson spent over two decades in the Packers’ front office and was the team’s director of pro personnel when the Packers won the Super Bowl for the 1996 season.
