Commission approves police cameras, readers

- NANCY BOWMAN, CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The City Commission approved the purchase of body-worn cameras for use by Dayton Police Department officers on Jan. 20. The camera system will improve transparency while providing evidence for potential investigations or prosecutions.

DPD will also install license plate readers throughout the cruiser fleet and at a number of fixed locations. Data/information collection standards will be developed with community input before the camera or plate reader systems are put in use.

A camera system was one of the recommendations emerging from the police reform initiative launched in mid-2020, in addition to recommendations on recruitment, oversight, use of force/de-escalation and community engagement. Event complex effort

The Miami County Park District Board voted Feb. 23 to have the district’s executive director enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Dayton Horse Show Association Inc. to explore fundraising opportunities for developing an event complex including an outdoor arena, covered outdoor arena, other accompanying structures, offices and/ or other improvements at the Lost Creek Reserve located east of Troy off Ohio 41.

The Lost Creek Reserve is the park district’s home.

The memorandum of understanding states the horse show association is exploring “the possibility of new locations where their annual show and competition could be held in the future.” The paperwork states the parties would be interested in looking at possible events/competitions involving horse or other agricultural events at the reserve.
