Q. Tell us about your education. A. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wright State University; school social work certificate, Ohio State University

Q. Where else have you worked? A. Behavior specialist, Springfield City Schools, Child and family therapist, Eastway’s Webster Street Academy

Q. What led you to a career in education?

A. I wanted to work in an elementary school since I was an elementary school student. I played school with my little sister and begged my grandmother to help grade her papers. I’m living my childhood dream and it’s better than I imagined.

Q. How has COVID-19 affected your students?

A. In general, they’re sad they have to miss out on things they expected to have (time to socialize, performances, activities and club meetings), but I am impressed with their resilience.

Q. What do you hope students take away from this year?

A. I hope our students learn to recognize how resilient and capable they are. Through the support of their families and other adults, they have managed to navigate the ambiguity of this year, sometimes better than the adults around them!

Q. What can families do to help students cope with current challenges?

A. Normalize your own struggle with your children. We’re all struggling with disappointment, disconnection and frustration, and we don’t know what to do. Patiently and calmly share your feelings and how you manage them with your children.
