DAILY BRIDGE CLUB:

- BY FRANK STEWART

When I watched today’s deal in a penny game, South was Tom Webb, known to us all as “Tangle” because he encounters more blocked suits and entry woes than anyone in my club.

Tangle was declarer at four spades, and West led the queen of clubs. Declarer took dummy’s ace and led the queen of trumps, winning. When he continued with the jack, East covered, and West threw a heart.

Tangle then led his deuce of diamonds to dummy’s jack. He led a trump to his seven and took the 10, drawing trumps, but when he led the ace of diamonds next, East discarded. Since Tangle couldn’t run the diamonds — the suit was blocked — he lost two clubs and two hearts.

Tangle got tangled up. In case West’s diamonds are 10-x-x-x, Tangle should start the diamonds by leading the queen to dummy’s king.

After he picks up the trumps, he takes the ace of diamonds and can lead a third diamond to dummy’s nine. Then he cashes two more diamonds to pitch his club losers, assuring an overtrick.

DAILY QUESTION: You hold: ♠ A10732 ♥ KJ

◆ AQ2 ♣ 6 3 2. Your partner opens one heart, you respond one spade and he rebids two hearts. What do you say?

ANSWER: Your partner promises six or more hearts. If he had only a fivecard suit, he would have a more descriptive second bid. You have two options. One is a raise to four hearts. The other is a temporizing bid of three diamonds, planning to pass if partner bids 3NT next. I would accept either call.
