Fire department celebrates
The Washington Township Fire Department is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Throughout the year, the department will be sharing memories and photos through its digital platforms and print publications. “It’s incredible to look back and see how the department has gone from a small group of volunteer firefighters in the 1940’s to an internationally accredited agency with the most credentialed staff than any department in Ohio. It’s truly a testament to the support of our community over the past 75 years. We wouldn’t be where we are today without that support,” said Trustee President Scott Paulson.
The Washington Township Fire Department was formally founded on February 1, 1946 with the hiring of Lewis Campbell as the first Fire Chief. At the time, the only fire station was a fire engine parked behind what is now Town Hall Theatre. “Over the past 75 years, the role of the fire department has expanded beyond fighting fires. Today, our crews respond to a wide range of emergency incidents, provide prevention and education programs, conduct investigations and building inspections, provide mutual aid to neighboring municipalities and much more. This year is about celebrating that growth and honoring our roots,” said Fire Chief Scott Kujawa.
Residents are encouraged to share their stories and memories about the department by emailing Safety Education Specialist Scott Henry at scott.henry@ washingtontwp.org.
