Building won’t be torn down

-

The owner of the Tavern building on West Main Street in downtown Troy told city staff Wednesday he was withdrawing a demolition application because there is a contract to purchase the property.

The notice came in a letter from Randy Kimmel of 116 West Main LLC to the city Planning Commission, which met Wednesday afternoon and removed the application to demolish from the table to discuss the letter.

The proposed demolition has been controversial with members of a local historic alliance last year protesting the demolition request. The building was damaged in the January 2020 tornado that moved through Troy, including its downtown.

In the letter, Kimmel said that should the sale not be finalized he would evaluate options, including another possible demolition application.

The party looking to buy the building would “rehabilitate the building with possible uses on the first and second floor,” said Patrick Titterington, the city service and safety director.

The building, a portion built in 1840, was home to an early jail and courthouse and has hosted a number of well-known businesses over the years.
