Active Transportation Plan reflects community
Miami Valley Neighbors,
As a Regional Planning Commission, MVRPC has a unique and important leadership role in the Miami Valley region. Founded upon the principles of regional collaboration, cooperation and consensus building, MVRPC serves as the common ground where area partners come together to work toward a shared vision across the Region. Our members represent nearly 90 local governments and public agencies. Together, we develop and implement innovative and sustainable strategies that enhance the region’s quality of life and economic vitality.
In August 2021, MVRPC kicked off our region’s first Active Transportation Plan. An Active Transportation Plan is a comprehensive review of infrastructure and policies to make walking, biking and transit use easy, convenient and safe choices for mobility in the region. The plan is an evolution of the Regional Bikeways Plan, which was last updated in 2015, expanded from an exclusive focus on bicycle transportation to include walking and transit access. The Miami Valley Regional Active Transportation Plan will align closely with the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Walk.Bike.Ohio statewide bike and pedestrian policy plan.
The Active Transportation Steering Committee, comprised of a diverse mix of individuals to include bike, pedestrian and transit users and local government and park districts, is leading the effort to shape a plan that reflects all aspects of our community.
The Steering Committee recently finalized the vision for the plan: The Miami ValDear ley’s Active Transportation network provides safe and equitable walking, biking and transit connections which enhance access to opportunity, well-being, environmental benefits and quality of life for all.
A major effort for this planning process is to engage with residents across Greene, Miami, Montgomery and northern Warren counties to get their feedback about active transportation needs.
To accomplish this, MVRPC has scheduled a series of public Listening Sessions to be held through November. Each open house will include an opportunity for participants to share their perceptions of walking, cycling and accessing transit in their community, plus a mapping activity to inform MVRPC of locations of particular concern.
Anyone unable to attend the sessions can visit mvrpc.org to complete an online survey.
