She’s ‘backbone’ of West Carrollton senior center.
WEST CARROLLTON — Mildred “Millie” Selby of Vandalia has been a treasurer of the West Carrollton Senior Citizens Center for the past decade and people say her efforts “provide so much on so little money.”
Selby was nominated as a Dayton Daily News Community Gem by Nancy Prass.
“She truly is the backbone of the organization,” Prass said. “She works tirelessly to make it a happy place for all members, even to the point of jeopardizing her health, and she does it without fanfare.”
Selby said she first starting volunteering for the role because her sister used to be a member there and got Selby and her late husband involved by signing up to play euchre. The two even helped in bringing bingo to the center. But as treasurer, she’s responsible for more than just taking care of the money. She’s also there for hours each Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday to help keep various aspects of the center running smoothly.
“I go in and set up for euchre and for bingo and more or less keep it going, make sure everything’s cleaned up before we leave and just have a good time while we’re there,” she said. “I enjoy playing euchre and I also call bingo every other week now. It’s not just me, but I enjoy helping the others.”
Selby said it feels good to be nominated as a Community Gem. “I’m glad they feel that way about me,” she said.
Part of her enjoyment of volunteering as treasurer for West Carrollton Senior Citizens Center and helping out with euchre and bingo is getting to see other people enjoy themselves, Selby said.
“I’m spending a lot of time there, but I don’t mind because I enjoy it, too,” she said.
Prass said that Selby is such a modest woman that she would likely deny “any acknowledgments of her talents, efficiencies and contributions to the smooth running of the center.”
“One member noted that Millie can provide so much on so little money, it’s a shame she isn’t in charge of the U.S. Treasury,” Prass said.
