Program aids in removing barriers to self-sufficiency
Montgomery County’s Path Ahead Program has been removing barriers to self-sufficiency for nearly two years, but now the program can help even more citizens thanks to an infusion of funds through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Path Ahead is a partnership between the county’s Workforce Division and Job and Family Services. A total of $130,000 in ARPA funding will allow the county to remove barriers for people who are underemployed but who would not qualify for other ways to fund essential, yet unmet, needs.
“Most people don’t know that a program like this exists and how it can help them,” said Adam Fohlen, program coordinator. “If there is a bill that is hindering a person’s ability to get to the next level of financial security, we might be able to help them.”
People at or below 200% of the federal poverty level have been eligible for a program called Prevention, Retention and Contingency (PRC).
In that program, families with children can get up to $1,750 a year to cover essential items for attaining and retaining employment. Items PRC can cover include current rent payments, utility payments, car repair, training, uniforms, steeltoe boots and other essential work equipment.
With ARPA funding, the Path Ahead program may even be able to help with things like past-due child care and essential equipment like laptops or tablets.
Criteria are broader for attaining ARPA funds to remove these barriers. A brief application and a release of information form are required of Path Ahead applicants.
If Path Ahead applicants are unemployed or under-employed, Workforce personnel may be able to assist them with securing a new job to improve their situation. Dedicated staff can also assist eligible citizens with training for on-demand careers in our area through the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA).
Each client will receive a plan from the Path Ahead team that will guide them toward a career.
Staff will work with each client to tailor a plan specific to their interests and skill sets. Through casework support and access to community resources, Montgomery County staff can guide participants on a path toward financial stability and increased personal success.
