Science Saturday reveals new schedule of shows for local children
Science Saturday has released its new show schedule, bringing a new level of adventure, excitement, and exploration to science. Not to mention the ties to Dayton’s historic past.
“There will be interactive opportunities for the kids, new technologies featured, more partnerships, such as with our friends in the military, and more guest speakers,” said Jessica Short, director of the Dayton Regional STEM Center, who oversees Science Saturday. “It’s action-packed with interesting topics for the kids.”
The first show of the season, “Superheroes,” kicks off on Saturday, March 4, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Engineers Club in downtown Dayton. Other shows called “Down on the Farm,” “Is it Magic? No, It’s Science,” and “Marvels of the Military” round out this season. The show’s hosts are science educators Mr. Frank (PR Frank) and Fultzie (Rebekah Fultz).
“They are engaging, entertaining and energetic,” Short said. “And you never know what might happen!”
Science Saturday is a byproduct of the “Barn Gang.” In 1907, Charles Kettering, Edward Deeds, Harold Talbott and other NCR engineers would meet in the evenings and weekends in
Deeds’ barn and tinker with ideas. These thinkers would become prolific designers and inventors. More than 100 years later, Science Saturday is a revival of Charles Kettering’s original Science Saturdays, which were held on the very stage currently used at the Engineers Club by Mr. Frank and Fultzie.
Science Saturday content has been developed for students in grades 2-6, but audience members of all ages are invited to attend and participate. Admission is free.
