Students, families staff can read book together

- Contributed

The adventures of a dynamic pig and her quest to become a sled dog in Antarctica are being brought to life nightly for Mad River students and their families. As part of a book study conducted by the district’s four elementary schools, Mad River staff are filmed reading chapters from “The Adventures of a South Pole Pig.” Then, several video chapters are posted weekly to the school’s Facebook page on Monday nights, with the final chapter videos to be aired on April 17.

The program kicked off at a Family Night in early February where every elementary student received a copy of the book. The students and their parents were asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks. Along with the book, students and parents received a reading schedule so that they can keep up at home, as well as book trivia and discussion questions.

The schools will be raffling prizes during announcements for students who turn in answers to the trivia questions. Mad River elementary teachers hope this new project will help instill a love of reading in students while also promoting family time because parents watch along with students.

“The Adventures of a South Pole Pig: A Novel of Snow and Courage” is a poignant novel about a purposeful pig, Flora, a diehard dreamer. She’s never left the farm, but she knows she was born for adventure. She’s determined to become a sled pig! A harrowing voyage to Antarctica, a bacon-loving cook, and a shipwreck in deadly conditions stand between Flora and her dream. What will happen to Flora, whose companions see her as more of a meal than an adventurer?
