Cupps, Washington head list of area alldistric­t hoops teams

Centervill­e senior Gabe Cupps and Chaminade Julienne senior George Washington III head the list of area players earning top all-Southwest District honors from the Ohio Prep Sportswrit­ers Associatio­n.

Cupps, the state’s reigning Mr. Basketball, was voted Division I Player of the Year for the second straight year. Cupps, an Indiana signee, led the top-ranked Elks to a 19-3 regular season and averaged 15.2 points and 6.9 assists.

Washington, a Michigan signee, is the Division II Player of the Year. He moved to Dayton this year and led the second-ranked Eagles to a 20-2 regular season, averaging 25.3 points.

Preble Shawnee junior Mason Shrout is the Division III Player of the Year. He led the Arrows to a 19-3 regular season with averages of 23.3 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Springfiel­d Catholic Central senior Tyler Galluch is the Co-Player of the Year in Division IV with Cincinnati Christian senior Caleb Brown. Galluch averaged 19.9 points and 10.4 rebounds. Brown averaged 21.7 points and 6.0 rebounds.

In coach of the year voting, Talawanda’s Conner Roberts was named Co-Coach of the Year in Division I with Nick Molz of Kings. Roberts led the Brave to a 15-7 mark in the regular season and Southwest Ohio Conference title. Tippecanoe’s Brock Moon won in Division II. In his first season, he led the Red Devils to a 19-3 regular season.

John Giles of Carlisle and Nick Worley of Dixie share the award in Division III, leading their programs to their best seasons in several years. Carlisle finished 19-3, won the Southweste­rn Buckeye League West Division. Dixie went 17-5, finished third in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference.

Spencer Cordonnier of Russia is coach of the year in Division IV. He led the Raiders to a 19-3 regular season. He took over the team after head coach David Borchers died in a car crash on Oct. 8.

Tri-Village sweeps top honors on girls all-district team

The top-ranked Tri-Village girls basketball team swept the top honors in Division IV in the all-Southwest District voting by the Ohio Prep Sportswrit­ers Associatio­n.

Senior guard Rylee Sagester, a Marshall signee, is the player of the year. She averaged 21.7 points, 4.2 assists and set the state record for career 3-pointers.

Gray led the Patriots to a 22-0 regular season and the top ranking in the state media poll.

Bethel senior Karley Moore is the Division III Player of the Year. Moore, who is uncommitte­d, led Bethel to an 18-4 regular season and the Three Rivers Conference championsh­ip. She averaged 15.7 points and 7.2 rebounds.

Carroll’s Cecilia Grosselin is the Division II Coach of the Year. She guided a young and inexperien­ced team to a 12-10 mark. The D-II player of the year was Purcell-Marian sophomore Dee Alexander (25.9 points per game).

Tommy McGuire of Madison shared coach of the year honors with Jared Cline of Madeiera in Division III. McGuire led the Mohawks to a 15-6 regular season and a share of the Southweste­rn Ohio Buckeye League West Division title.
