Centerville preparing students for futures

- Superintendent Jon Wesney

As spring approaches, students and educators prepare for the final stretch of school, and plans are already underway for the next school year. It’s this time of year I’m often reminded of the programming and educational opportunities provided to students across our district.

A core principle in Centerville City Schools’ mission to Empower, Challenge, and Support every learner to grow every day is the belief that learning is attainable for all students, and this is reflected in the student-centered instruction that takes place throughout the district.

Educators work hard to respond to the needs of each learner and are always looking for new ideas and approaches to improve the educational experience for everyone. Although student growth through academic and extracurricular activities can be seen at all grade levels, families really begin to notice a wide variety of choices as their children enter high school.

Over the last few weeks, Centerville High School students have selected courses for the upcoming year, with more than 220 classes available to meet their needs and interests. Career programs, advanced placement (AP) classes, and other learning opportunities are open to all students, regardless of their background or ability level.

Before making course requests, students could explore courses through the AP Fair, Career Education Expo and Family Night, informational sessions with guidance counselors, and opportunities to learn more about options after high school.

High school students recently participated in the annual College and Career Fair. The fair brought together representatives from various colleges and universities throughout the country, including large and small schools, public and private institutions, and technical colleges.

Students could speak with admissions counselors and learn more about each school’s programs, majors, and academic requirements. They were able to gain a better understanding of the campus culture and student life at each institution.

In addition to exploring colleges, students also had the opportunity to meet professionals from various career fields, including business, healthcare, technology, engineering, and more. Professionals shared insights into their industries, discussed their career paths, and offered advice on succeeding in their respective fields.

The fair was a valuable experience for our high school students, allowing them to gather information and explore different career paths before making important decisions about their future. Students left the fair with a better understanding of their academic and career options and the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen career paths.

Overall, the College and Career Fair was successful, providing students with a valuable opportunity to explore their options and learn from professionals in their desired fields. The event was a reminder of the importance of career exploration and education and how it can help shape students’ future success.

When thinking about programming, it’s hard not to mention our fine arts programming. March is recognized as Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools Month, and we are proud to celebrate these occasions. Thanks to the community’s support, the district has been recognized three times as a Best Communities for Music Education Award recipient, reflecting the strong community support for our fine arts programming.

Community support is a vital part of Centerville City Schools’ success. With many educational choices, learning opportunities, and programming options, Centerville City Schools is a great place to Empower, Challenge, and Support our students!
