Joining clubs helps students find place to belong

Want to learn how to play pickleball? Do you enjoy debating? Are you interested in science? Do you just want to relax and meet new people?

At Centerville High School, students can find a club for just about any interest.

“Joining a club introduces students to a new community in which they can interact with others to learn more about a shared passion,” said senior Hamilton Roebken.

In addition to the school’s athletic teams and performing arts groups, there are about 80 student-led teams at Centerville High School. Club offerings vary from year to year, based on student interests. As the new school year got underway, students had an opportunity to learn more about these groups during the annual Club Fair.

“There are so many clubs that often the students do not realize that there is a club for them,” said Craig Suttman, the career education principal at CHS, who helped coordinate this year’s fair. “Every year, new clubs are formed by students. Club representatives are excited to share their clubs and get other students involved.”

This year’s choices range from ping pong, dance and women in STEM, to art, mental wellness and esports. You can practice coding, improve your public speaking skills, and volunteer around the community. And yes, there is even a club where you can practice relaxation techniques.

“Students should join clubs at CHS because they allow you to meet and connect with new people,” said senior Alexis Markowski. “They also let you become more involved in our school community.”
