Helping to build ‘future self vision’ as students must adapt

- Shannon Cox is superintendent of the Montgomery County ESC.

In today’s rapidly evolving future, change is occurring at an unprecedented pace. Topics like AI, workforce readiness, and cognitive development are top of mind for educators; teachers know they need to prepare students for careers that are yet to be created. Keeping pace with the changing demands of society and the job market is a constant challenge. The workforce of tomorrow needs to be equipped both professionally and personally, and a focus on personal development is more important than ever.

Investing in our students in ways that will holistically prepare them to adapt to change and thrive in ways that are meaningful to them is crucial. This is how we will promote the well-being of our future workforce — by making sure all youth develop a Future Self Vision.

Future Self Vision is more than leading students to be able to answer a question like, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Having a plan that includes academic goals is not enough. Today’s students need technical, emotional, and behavioral skills that will transfer to their Future Self. A Future Self that will be able to earn a living wage to support them and their families.

Helping students develop a Future Self Vision is about giving them opportunities to consider what kind of life they want when they grow up. It is about meeting our youth where they are and providing them with an array of experiences that will help them experience the “what ifs” and “what abouts.” This sets the stage for members of a future workforce who are working in alignment with their values, interests, and natural skills.

Every student needs to be given a chance to envision themselves in the future and determine what their future opportunities truly are. Developing an attainable vision extends beyond identifying career goals; it encompasses helping a student determine their personal values, natural abilities, and aspirations. By nurturing this vision, students will be able to plug into our communities, meet workforce needs, and live fulfilled lives.

Every student deserves an opportunity to have experiences and connections that offer self-discovery, employability skills, and career exploration with a lifestyle-first approach. Ultimately, every student deserves a Future Self Vision.

Montgomery County ESC is interconnecting these approaches and providing opportunities for middle and high school students. Contact us for more information.
