Delta visits Monroe tonight in post-Team State dual

- DANE FUELLING

While the Team State Duals may be over, the dual meet season marches on and tonight’s matchup between Delta and

Adams Central should be one of the better matches in this part of the state this week.

Delta dropped a disappointing match in the first round to Hamilton Heights and had to settle for fifth place, beating Bellmont and Garrett to end the day.

For Adams Central, it was a great day with an anticlimactic ending in the finals, but it’s hard to argue that the Jets should be anything but pleased to have finished in second place.

Now the two teams try to use tonight’s dual as a tuneup for individual tournaments on Saturday. The Eagles will attempt to win the Hoosier Heritage Conference, while the Jets will host seven teams in their annual invitational.

The Jets had just three wrestlers finish 3-0 at Franklin and they all came in a row, with Wyatt McAfee, Trevor Currie and Keegan Bluhm scoring the biggest points of the weekend. Adams Central will hope to win all three of their matches if they are to knock off the Eagles.

Zac Wurm will also have a shot at a victory at heavyweight when he faces Isaac Moss, who is just 18-7.

One big challenge for a Jet will come at 120 if freshman Maverick Dubach meets Neal Mosier, who was sixth at state a year ago. Mosier is currently fifth in the state and Dubach will have a chance to measure himself against the favorite to win the regional.

Of course, the Jets could choose to bump around him and the coin flip could play a big role if coach Currie is in the playmaking mood.

The feature match, however, has to be the potential matchup between Gavin Cook and Dalton Tuttle at 132. Tuttle is a renowned head hunter and pinner, but Cook should have no problem with him on his feet as the bout goes on.

Delta also has solid wrestlers at 145 and 152 with Kolten Rhonemus and Kaeb Stebbins, but the Jets will counter with seniors at those weights, with both of them wrestling for the final time in the Hangar in their careers.

Tonight’s match begins at 6 p.m. in Monroe.
