MYERS BRINGS HOME ISWA TITLE FOR DECATUR WRESTLING CLUB
INDIANAPOLIS—Success at the ISWA Folkstyle State Finals is not measured in the same way by every wrestler or dad in the corner. Instead, it’s a step up from last year or redemption from a previous loss years ago. With that in mind, there was plenty of success for county wrestlers throughout the weekend, which featured about as much Adams County flavor as any mat fan could want.
In simply one of the largest youth sporting events in the country, with over 2800+ wrestlers involved, wrestling aficionados were treated to the voice of Mary Friedt over the loudspeakers, the technical genius of Marv Drier in multiple gymnasia and fieldhouses, and the wrestling talents of wrestlers young and mature.
Adams County grapplers grabbed nearly every spot on the podium at one point or the other, with Gabe Myers winning a title and Trevor Currie and Ben Mills finishing runnerup. There were also outstanding performances by the likes of Jacob Binegar, Sam Wolpert and Xavior Palacios, as all three won placements in deep weight classes. Even the little guys, like Adams Central’s Kley Beer got in on the act. It wasn’t all about winning, though.
“It’s about coming down here and figuring out what it’s all about,” said one local dad after assessing his son’s chances in the field. “There may only be one guy in his weight we can beat, but we have to learn how to lose, too.”
Memorable wins were scored by relative grappling novices like Jaxon Blythe and Dylan McBride, but each one was memorable and worth the long lines and the endless searches for parking spots.
Some of the dads even cracked a smile, too.
