Baker leads Jets to victory in pitching duel

- Matthew Klingenberger Sports Reporter

Pitcher Addie Baker delivered an outstanding complete-game performance and the Adams Central Jets took down the Heritage Patriots in Monroe on Thursday, 2-1.

The low score was due to the sublime pitching brought by both Baker and her counterpart Danica Fuller.

Neither pitcher would give in, and the game was decided in dramatic fashion.

Adams Central (12-2 overall, 3-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third inning, but Heritage (8-5, 2-1 ACAC) countered with a run of their own in the road half of the sixth.

The Jets won the game on a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.

The plaudits belong to the defensive effort exhibited by both teams, starting with their pitchers.

Both Baker and Fuller went the distance for their teams.

Baker struck out three hitters, conceded only five hits over a remarkable seven-inning performance.

Even though her team came up short, Fuller still did her part, only allowing two runs on six hits in the game.

Thursday’s game was a continuation of what Adams Central has done all season: find ways to win.

The Jets are currently in second place in the Allen County Athletic Conference standings, only half-a-game behind the Jay County Patriots for top spot in the league table.

Going against the Jets in the race for the ACAC crown is the fact they were beaten earlier this year by Jay County and do not see the Patriots again before the end of the regular season.

But Thursday’s win will certainly serve as a major confidence boost for Adams Central.

The squad has an open day on Friday that they will use to prepare for two games on Saturday.

South Bend Clay will be the first opponent of the day for the Jets with first pitch versus the Colonials slated for 11:00 a.m.

Later in the day, Adams Central will finish with a matchup with the Central Noble Cougars.
