Decatur baseball completes regular season

- Matthew Klingenberger Sports Reporter Decatur Daily Democrat

After postponements at the end of last week, Thursday saw the end of the Decatur Youth Baseball regular season.

Offense was abundant in the Major League games.

Leading off the night in the top age group, the Yankees put up 15 runs against the Indians en route to a 15-3 victory.

Later, the Cubs clinched the number one seed in next week’s league tournament by defeating the White Sox. Like the Yankees earlier in the evening, the Cubs reached double figures in their 10-6 victory.

In the Minor League division, the Cubs will also enter the tournament as the top seed.

They finished the regular season with a score more commonly seen on the football field. But rather than on the gridiron, the Cubs took down the White Sox by a 17-6 scoreline on the diamond Thursday.

The Yankees closed out their regular season slate with a convincing win over the Reds, 12-1, helping them build momentum before the tournament gets underway.

Cub teams recorded wins in all three age groups Thursday, but the Coach Pitch division Cubs will not be the one-seed in the tournament.

The White Sox grabbed the pole position in spite of not playing on the final night of the regular season.

The Cubs will carry a positive feeling into the postseason, though, after a tight 7-6 victory against the Yankees.

In the division’s final game of the regular season, the Indians evened their record at 5-5 with a win over the Tigers.

Tournament action begins on Monday.

In Major League play, the Cardinals and Indians will vie for the right to face the Cubs on Tuesday.

The Cubs will play in the first game Tuesday and the White Sox and Yankees will play their semifinal later that evening.

Monday will feature a pair of Minor League quarterfinals.

The Cardinals and White Sox will open with the winner getting the Cubs Tuesday in the semis.

The Reds and Indians will play the second game of the evening. The winner of that game will have a date with the Yankees.

Only the White Sox have a first round bye in Coach Pitch. The other six teams will compete on the opening night of the tournament.

Indians-Yankees will start the night’s action with the semifinal opponent for the White Sox being the winner of that contest.

The Tigers and Cardinals will feature in the second game of the night while the Cubs will battle the Reds in the nightcap.

The championship games for each division are scheduled for Thursday night.
