High school golfers ready to hit the course

- Matthew Klingenberger Sports Reporter Decatur Daily Democrat

It can be argued that nowhere is the arrival of spring more evident than at a golf course. Once golfers return to play a round, winter weather is- usually- in the rearview mirror.

Later this month, golfers from Adams Central, Bellmont and South Adams will be on the course for an exciting campaign.

South Adams fell just short of a place at regionals last season. In sectional play at Bluffton, only a few shots separated the Starfires and a place in the ensuing round.

Their bid to go further than they did last year is scheduled to start at Heritage on April 15th.

There will be a considerable Adams County influence on the Starfire schedule after their meeting with the Patriots.

South Adams will host the SA Golf Invitational on April 20th at Wabash Valley Golf Club in Geneva. Adams Central will host them at the same course on April 23rd. Both the Jets and Starfires will make the drive to Cross Creek Golf Club in Decatur to take on Bellmont two days later.

The Allen County Athletic Conference Championships will be held in Celina, Ohio on May 18th.

The Starfires will play at home for the final time in 2024 on May 13th versus Bluffton.

A May 21st trip to Timber Ridge Golf Course to battle Norwell will conclude the regular season slate for South Adams.

Bellmont enjoyed the best season of any of the local clubs last year. The Braves qualified for regionals in Yorktown.

Winston Brown, one of their top players from a season ago, was a senior in 2023, meaning they will have to fill his shoes, but the team has shown that it is capable of doing so.

Bellmont will start the year by playing at Timber Ridge next Tuesday against Norwell and Fort Wayne Wayne.

Northeast 8 competition will get underway for Bellmont two days later with a visit to East Noble at Noble Hawk Golf Links.

The Braves will start their home calendar on April 16th at Cross Creek against New Haven.

A May 20th home competition versus Heritage will complete the regular season.

Adams Central will come into 2024 with aspirations of taking the next step. The team placed seventh at the same sectional meet that Bellmont and South Adams competed at.

A day after their April 9th opener against Bluffton, the Jets will travel to Northfield before hosting Woodlan on April 15th.

May 1st is the scheduled date for their final home meet. Adams Central will host Heritage on that occasion.

The team will finish the regular season with road trips to Jay County and Norwell on May 23rd and 28th, respectively.
