Mary Kathleen (Katie) Peacock

PHOENIX - Mary Kathleen “Katie” (Scanlon) Peacock passed away on September 21, 2023, after a heroic battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Though the disease took her memory, it did not alter her kind and patient personality, prompting the staff at Huger Mercy Living Center to refer to her as “Perfect Katie.” Her legacy is one of kindness toward all and malice toward none.

Born on November 26, 1933 to Daniel Joseph and Mary Rose (Gaynor) Scanlon in Syracuse, New York, Katie attended Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown. She was editor-in-chief of the yearbook and valedictorian of the class of 1951. Katie then earned a dual major in Math and Physics at the College of St. Rose in Albany.

In 1959 Katie married George Carl Peacock. They settled in Rochester, raising seven children: George (Chapel Hill, NC), David/Melissa (Reading, PA), John/Kathy (Rochester, NY), Anne/Suzanne (Rockport, ME), Daniel/Bridget (Phoenix, AZ), Stephen/Kim (Reading, MA) and Andrew/ Wendy (Wexford, PA).

A lifelong educator, Katie earned her Master’s in Special Education from Nazareth College and spent her career teaching in Brighton and Penfield. In 2011, Katie and George relocated to Phoenix, Arizona and, as was her wish, she never saw another snowflake.

Katie was predeceased by her husband George (2015), her siblings: Daniel (Bud) Scanlon, Dr. John Scanlon, and Mary Rose McAloon. She is survived by her seven children, six daughters-inlaw, more than 20 grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and great-grandkids.

A funeral mass will be held in her honor on Saturday, May 18th at 10am at St. Thomas More in Brighton, NY. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Katie’s name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
