Trader Joe’s basil recall hits stores in NY

- Sarah Taddeo

Trader Joe’s announced that it was recalling its Infinite Herbs Organic Basil product this week over possible salmonella contamination.

The recall affects stores in 29 states, including New York and a number of other Northeast states like Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.

That means the Rochester area Trader Joe’s on Monroe Avenue would have sold these basil products.

Which Trader Joe’s basil product could be contaminated?

The basil is sold in 2.5 ounce clamshell packages, and the possibly contaminated product would have been on shelves for sale between Feb, 1, 2024 and April 6, 2024. The item number is UPC# 8 18042 02147 7, which will be printed on the barcode.

If you bought this product during this date range, you can return it to a Trader Joe’s location for a full refund, or discard it. If you bought basil from Trader Joe’s and cannot tell if it was Infinite Herbsbrand, do not eat or use it – throw it away.

How many people sickened by Trader Joe’s basil?

Twelve salmonella illnesses and one hospitalization in seven states were likely caused by the basil, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Illness from salmonella poisoning usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and could last from four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.

Children under 5, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections.
