Should I reduce the amount of carbs in my diet?

-

This is a great question, and it comes from Kathryn, a monthly plan member in the DeniseAustin.com community. She asked: “Is it a good idea to eliminate carbs from my diet to lose weight?” People are always asking me about low-carb diets, so let’s talk about carbs! We all need to consume carbohydrates in our diet, but it’s the right carbs that are what’s so important. Eliminating carbs to try to lose weight is not the answer. Carbohydrates provide your body with energy, which you need to fuel your workouts and daily activities. While it isn’t a bad idea to cut back on simple carbohydrates, such as white bread, crackers and frozen yogurt—these foods tend to be low in nutrients and high in sugar—complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, oatmeal and whole-grain bread provide essential minerals and fiber.

The key is to choose your carbs wisely and balance your meals with all four food groups. Add lean proteins to your pasta and load up on fruits and veggies. Attempting to eliminate an entire food group is an unhealthy approach that can set you up for failure.

I always recommend eating small, healthy portions that are part of well-balanced meals. I love food, and you absolutely can enjoy delicious meals and lose weight. It’s all about moderation.
