The wait is over for Chick-fil-A fans in two metro Detroit communities. Locations in Shelby Township and Northville are set to open Thursday.

The Chick-fil-A in Shelby Township at 13811 Hall Road is the first one in Macomb County. In Northville, the new location is at 20135 Haggerty Road in Wayne County. Each restaurant will have about 150 full- and part-time employees.

Dennis Sampier is the franchise owner/operator of the Shelby Township location, according to a news release.

Before becoming a franchise owner, Sampier worked in professional sports, including 11 years as vice president of community relations with the Detroit Pistons and executive director of Palace Sports & Entertainment.

In Northville, Phil Whitsel is the franchise owner/operator. Whitsel previously worked in the shopping center industry.

Both locations will open as drive-thru only. You can also order through the Chick-fil-A mobile app. Hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

In place of its usual meal giveaway to the first 100 customers, Chick-fil-A will instead surprise “100 local heroes” that are making an impact in metro Detroit with free Chick-fil-A for a year.

The Chick-fil-A foundation has also partnered with Feeding America, donating $25,000 to a local food bank for every new restaurant opening. Metro Detroit organizations will receive a combined $50,000 with these two new store openings.

Chick-fil-A in 2019 announced that several Michigan locations would open in 2020 including one in Allen Park, the first one Downriver.

The Atlanta-based fast food chain is known for its pickle-brined fried chicken sandwiches. On Monday, they introduced a new sandwich, the Grilled Spicy Chicken Deluxe Sandwich, available for a limited time. It’s grilled chicken marinated in a spicy seasoning served on a toasted multigrain brioche bun with ColbyJack cheese, lettuce and tomato. Also created for the sandwich is a creamy cilantro lime sauce.

Chick-fil-A is one of the more popular fast food chains among consumers. For the sixth year in a row, the chain garnered the top spot for fast food on the American Customer Satisfaction Index’s (ACSI) report for 2020. Despite a 2% decline, Chick-fil-A remained the leader with a score of 84. In 2019, the chain earned a score of 86 according to the ASCI.

Earlier in 2019, Chick-fil-A locations were the target of protests for reasons that include its foundation’s financial support of organizations reported to oppose LGBTQ rights. Several of the opposition protests derailed plans for Chick-fil-A restaurants at airports in both Buffalo, New York, and San Antonio.

The controversy dates to at least 2012, when comments opposing same-sex marriage by CEO Dan Cathy sparked nationwide responses of both support and protest. In recent years, the company claimed it would “leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government.”

In 2020, Chick-fil-A announced the Chickfil-A Foundation changed its policy for giving.

The Chick-fil-A Foundation, according to its website, says it supports initiatives in the

areas of education, homelessness and hunger. They also say its foundation and Chickfil-A does not give to political campaigns.
