MDOT to begin M-14 work, finish I-275 project
As one freeway project nears an end, another begins.
Commuters in western Wayne County will see some relief from the years-long work on Interstate 275 as the project enters its final year. But, the Michigan Department of Transportation is beginning a new project on M-14.
Work on the two freeways will impact people headed through Livonia, Northville, Plymouth and Canton.
Here’s what you need to know.
Shoulder work beginning on M-14
MDOT will begin a $130 million rebuild of
M-14 between Newburgh and Sheldon roads this spring. The project is expected to last through late 2026. The project will also impact people traveling on Interstate 96 in Livonia.
Westbound drivers can expect to see crews widening the shoulder this construction season, which will prepare that section to handle eastbound and westbound travel next year. Next year, MDOT will reconstruct the eastbound side.
“The following two years, we’re going to be reconstructing that stretch of road and about two dozen bridges that need work done,” said MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross.
Cross said the road sorely needs improvements and believes the work will leave metro Detroit with improved freeways for years to come.
“It’s kind of the last puzzle piece in that
area,” she said.
Interstate 275 project entering final stages
The mammoth four-year, $281 million rebuild of I-275 between Five Mile and Northline roads is expected to come to an end by late fall. Drivers can expect intermittent work along the entire project area as crews work on landscaping, shoulder repairs and other small items.
“The only thing we’ll have on 275 this year will be occasional lane closures for short periods of time while they’re working on clearing the crossover on the median,” Cross said.
Cross said most work will be completed on weekends or on off-peak hours on weekdays.
