Monday’s games

Cubs 3, Mets 1: Christopher Morel hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning for the visiting Cubs, who were no-hit by Luis Severino into the eighth inning.

Mike Tauchman doubled with one out in the ninth against Edwin Diaz (0-1) before Ian Happ struck out. Morel followed by hitting a 3-1 pitch well into the left field seats.

Brandon Nimmo led off the first with a homer for the Mets. Nick Madrigal tied the score 1-1 by hitting into a run-scoring forceout in the eighth.

Chicago’s Mark Leiter Jr. (1-1) got the final two outs of the eighth and Hector Neris earned his fourth save in the ninth, when he walked two batters before closing out the win by whiffing DJ Stewart and Brett Baty.

The late comeback by the Cubs left Severino with a tough-luck no-decision on an evening in which he mounted the longest no-hit bid by a Mets starter in almost eight years.

Severino threw just 79 pitches through the first seven innings and allowed just two baserunners – via a fourth-inning walk of Happ and a seventh-inning plunking of Tauchman.

Orioles 2, Yankees 0: Gunnar Henderson homered and Grayson Rodriguez gave up just five hits over 52⁄3 innings for the host Orioles.

After scoring 15 runs in each of their past two games, the Yankees were shut out on seven hits. New York had at least one baserunner in every inning except the eighth but went 0for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Yankee starter Clarke Schmidt (2-1) was almost as good. He allowed one run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out five and walking three.

New York’s Gleyber Torres lined a single to center leading off the ninth against Yennier Cano. With Craig Kimbrel unavailable, Danny Coulombe came on and retired three straight hitters for his first save.

Leading off the bottom of the first, Henderson lined a 2-2 pitch over the scoreboard in right for his 10th home run of the season.

Nationals 7, Marlins 2: Jake Irvin responded from his worst outing of the season to pitch six solid innings and CJ Abrams smacked a two-run homer to help the visiting Nationals complete a four-game sweep.

Irvin (2-2), who gave up four hits, struck out three and didn’t issue a walk, was unscathed until Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s two-out, two-run home run in the sixth. Dylan Floro and Matt Barnes completed the combined four-hitter.

Irvin allowed six runs and 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings in Wednesday’s loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But this marked his second time taking a shutout into the sixth inning in a twoweek span.

The Marlins, with the worst record in the National League, have lost seven consecutive games. The Nationals improved to .500.

Miami starter Trevor Rogers (0-4) had another five-inning outing, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three.

All seven Washington runs crossed the plate with two outs.
