Ducks 101

Mistake #4

IGNORING THE WOLF AT YOUR BACK DOOR

-

OK, it might not be a literal wolf but something similar. First-time duck owners often underestimate the threat that lurks in even the most urban of yards. Ducks are prey, not predator.

“Basically, in all modern settings, predators will eventually be a problem,” Holderread says. “To prevent losses, one needs to be prepared.”

Animals such as coyotes, foxes, hawks, raccoons (especially raccoons!), cats, dogs and even snapping turtles can be devastating to ducklings and ducks. Do some research about the wildlife in your town or city, and make provisions to protect your ducks. This could involve constructing appropriate shelters and fenced areas for the ducks as well as being vigilant when predators are active.
